Privacy Policy

What Outlet Powered collects through Google Analytics, the contact form and the finder, what our hosting and database providers handle, and how to opt out.

This policy explains what Outlet Powered collects when you use outletpowered.com and how that information is handled. It covers site analytics, the contact form, the "Describe your home" box in the power station finder, the calculators and links to other websites. It matches how the site works today. If that changes, we will update this page and its date first.

What we collect

Outlet Powered uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages readers find useful. We do not run advertising tags, and we do not sell or share your information for advertising. The admin pages also use a sign-in cookie for the site owner.

Beyond analytics, what we handle depends on which features you use: the details you send through the contact form, and the sentence you type into the "Describe your home" box.

Analytics (Google Analytics)

We load Google Analytics 4 through Google Tag Manager on the public pages of outletpowered.com. It records the pages you view, how you arrived (for example a search engine or another site), clicks on links to other sites, scrolling, and general device details such as browser, screen size and approximate location (country, region and city, worked out by Google from your IP address). It sets first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID, which let it tell a returning visit from a new one.

We do not send your name, email address or the text you type into forms to Google Analytics. Advertising features are switched off: the site tells Google that ad storage, ad user data and ad personalization are denied for every visitor.

  • If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, the analytics code does not load at all.
  • For visitors Google places in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, analytics storage is denied by default and the analytics tag does not run.
  • To opt out, you can block cookies in your browser settings, or install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Google handles this data under its own privacy policy. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services on its partner sites page.

The contact form

The contact form collects your email address, your message and, if you choose to give it, your name. We store these in our database so we can read your message and reply.

To limit spam, we also store a one-way salted hash of the sender's IP address, not the address itself. That hash is erased from the message after 2 days.

We send the first 2,000 characters of your message to TypeSafe AI (api.typesafe.ai), a decision model we use to label each message for our inbox: its topic, and whether it reports a safety problem. The labels only help us sort the inbox. No message is blocked because of a label.

We keep contact messages in our database until we delete them. You can ask us to delete yours at any time through the contact page.

The "Describe your home" box

The power station finder lets you describe what you need to keep running in one sentence. We send that sentence to TypeSafe AI, which picks matching appliances from our list. Text that looks like instructions to an AI is not sent; simple keyword rules answer it instead.

We store the answer (the appliances and hours picked, not your sentence) for up to 2 days. It is filed under a one-way hash of the sentence, so the same sentence does not have to be sent twice. Please leave out names, addresses and other personal details when you use the box.

To stop overuse, per-visitor limits use a salted hash of the IP address. Those limit records are deleted daily once their time window ends.

What our hosting and database providers handle

Vercel hosts the site. Like any web host, it receives the technical details of each request, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested, to deliver the page and protect the service. Vercel handles that data under its own privacy policy.

Our database runs on Neon (Postgres). It stores the contact messages and the cached finder answers described above.

The theme setting stored in your browser

If you use the light or dark theme switch, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the name "theme" so the site remembers it. It stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can clear it by clearing site data in your browser.

The calculators

The runtime and size calculators run in your browser. The numbers you enter there are not sent anywhere. Only the "Describe your home" sentence is sent, as explained above.

Pages link to manufacturers, stores and sources. When you follow a link, the other site's privacy policy applies. If a link is an affiliate link, the store or its affiliate network may set its own cookies to record that the visit came from Outlet Powered. See our affiliate disclosure.

Children

This site is written for adults planning home backup power. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

Before we add an email list, advertising or any other form, we will update this policy first and ask for consent where the law requires it.
